Strauss Mansion Museum opens for the season
Located at 27 Prospect Circle at the top of East Mount Avenue in Atlantic

Highlands, the museum of the Atlantic Highlands Historical Society will open

for the season, and be open on Sundays, 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. through December 9.

The Strauss Mansion is a 21-room house built in 1893 for use as a ³summer

cottage² by Adolph Strauss, a wealthy New York importer and merchant. Come

visit the only Queen Anne style building in Monmouth County that is open to the

public. Admission is free but donations are appreciated.

Wednesday, March 21
American funeral and cemetery customs since colonial times
Practices evolved from simple family-managed arrangements in early days, to

today's elaborate methods promoted by the multi-billion dollar corporate funeral

industry. Al Savolaine, a Matawan local historian, will offer examples and

colorful stories illustrating this aspect of American culture. Meeting will be at

the Fireman's Fieldhouse, Avenue C & West Washington Avenue, off Center

Avenue in Atlantic Highlands, 7:30 p.m. Free and open to the public.

Wednesday, April 18
Visit to the 1770s Murray Farm House (Poricy Park, Middletown)
We'll meet at and tour this charming, authentically restored pre-Revolutionary

farmhouse, a registered N.J. State Historic Site located in Poricy Park in nearby

Middletown. Its curator, Ellen Jackson, will present the history of the house and

its colonial occupants. Its builder, Joseph Murray, fought in the militia against the

British who raided his home, sent him to prison in New York, and later killed

him as he was plowing his fields. Meet at Poricy Park, off Oak Hill Road in

Middletown, 7:30 p.m. Free and open to the public.

Wednesday, May 16
Preserving and scanning the night sky
Continuing our 2006 presentation, local astronomy buff Charles Kirby will

describe how light pollution causes dangerous glare and makes us lose sight of

stars and planets. Then we'll peer heavenward through his telescope and

binoculars to see what we can see. Meet at Fireman's Fieldhouse, Avenue C &

West Washington Avenue, off Center Avenue in Atlantic Highlands, 7:30 p.m.

Free and open to the public.

Wednesday, June 20
Burrowes Mansion history and tour (Matawan)
Built in 1723, the house is largely intact, with hand-split cedar shakes outside

and much original woodwork inside. It was bought in 1769 by John Burrowes,

a wealthy produce merchant who ran ships to Manhattan. The first New Jersey

company of the Revolutionary War was mustered there. In the mid-1800s, the

house was a hotel, and a tea room in the 1930s. Listed on both the State and

National Registers of Historic Places, it was bought by Matawan Borough in

1973 and is the headquarters of the Matawan Historical Society. Meet at the

house, 94 Main Street in Matawan, 7:30 p.m. Free and open to the public.
