Growing a Local History Museum

Historical societies, friends groups, and boards in communities all over New

Jersey have historic sites they would like to share with the public. Growing a

Local History Museum, a program offered through Drew University’s Historic

Preservation Program, will explore the issues and obstacles to making that happen.

Case studies and guest speakers cover topics including formation of a mission

statement and strategic planning, applying for grants, building restoration and

adaptive reuse, developing education programs, curatorial and archival

responsibilities, marketing and fund-raising. The workshop includes a field trip to

a local history museum and hosts an opportunity for the formation of an individual

historic site action plan.

Taught by Janice Armstrong, the Director of Education for Fleming Castle, this

workshop will be held on Drew University’s campus in Madison, New Jersey from

June 19 - 23, 2007.  The cost for this unique class is $260.
